Press Release

 June 20, 2019

Monrovia, 19 June, 2019- This year marks the 70th anniversary of SOS Children’s Villages. SOS Children’s Villages International is a global federation of SOS Children’s Villages working to protect children and empowers families.

SOS Children’s Villages International comprises 118 National Associations. SOS Children’s Villages work with communities, partners and states to ensure that the rights of all children, in every society, are fulfilled.

This year is a milestone in the history of the organisation. It highlights 10 years of UN Guidelines, 30 years of United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child as well as 70th years of expertise in innovating child care guided by UN Guidelines for Alternative Care for Children to which SOS Children’s Villages made key contributions in the development.

We are committed to supporting the UN Resolution 2019 which focuses on “children without parental care.” We are driven by our Mission: to build families for children in need, to help them shape their own futures and to share in the development of their communities.

An estimated 220 million of the world’s children growing up without adequate parental care. In Liberia an estimated 14,000 children growing up alone in Monrovia and its environs. Their lives are neither positive nor sustainable.

SOS Children’s Villages provide holistic support and high quality services in 135 countries and territories. In Liberia we have impacted and transformed thousands of lives, with the support of our sponsor and donors, most of these individuals have significantly improved their chances of succeeding in life and are able to contribute positively to the development of their communities and the societies.

SOS Children’s Villages 38 years of operations in Liberia is transforming lives and creating opportunities for young people and families. Through our efforts together with partners, we contribute to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the global goals for peace and prosperity adopted by the United Nations in 2015, as well as the Liberian government PRO-POOR AGENDA FOR PROSPERITY AND DEVELOPMENT.

With 70 years of expertise in working to ensure children’s rights globally, we are committed to taking action to contribute to building a sustainable future for children. 3,450 individuals from 37 countries who were supported in the past by SOS Children’s Villages are self-reliant. SOS Children’s Villages will continue to impact the lives of millions of children in the years to come. This will be achieved by working directly with children, families, communities, and by leading a movement to ensure every child’s right to quality care.

Our commitment to children is a promise we live out daily and our drive towards quality is the hallmark. We seek continuous improvement while building on our experience and learning from the children themselves. Our strategy for the next decade is to ensure the best care of children, through innovation and partnership so that no child grows up alone.

Our 70 years of experience supporting children worldwide without parental care, and those at risk of losing it, have given us a deep understanding of how to care for children who need someone and how to help prevent the breakdown of families. We do this through innovative and effective partnerships with donors, communities, governments and other organizations.

Our 2030 Strategy helps us respond to the changing needs in the communities where we work, putting the most disadvantaged children at the centre of all decisions.

Our strategy directly relates and contributes to the Sustainable Development Goals in key areas such as poverty, inequality, education, health, social and child protection, and decent work. By 2030, SOS Children’s Villages Federation aims to ensure that many more children succeed in life and to lead the world’s largest child-care movement. Our vision is that “No child should grow up alone,” which is accompanied by a pledge to leave no one behind”.
