Faith’s Rise Above Adversity
3 out of 10 people in Monrovia are living in poverty, the situation is significantly worse in rural areas, where 8 out of 10 individuals are affected by poverty (Liberia Poverty Assessment 2023 Report).
Faith, a mother of four, found herself at a crossroads when providing for her family becomed a challenge. Like many in Faith’s community, she faced economic hardships that threatened the survival and future of her children. Yet, amidst these challenges, a beacon of hope emerged.
In the heart of Paynesville, 8 miles south of Monrovia, Faith has embarked on a remarkable journey, thanks to the SOS Children’s Villages – supported Family Strengthen Programme that supported her 10-month training programme.
“Skills are not just tools; they’re the keys that unlock doors to opportunities. I never imagined the possibility,” says Faith.
A Journey of Faith
Initially hesitant but driven by a deep desire to create a better life for her children, Faith embraced the opportunity with unwavering determination. Faith enrolled in a 10-month training program focused on interior decoration and pastry.
“The program didn’t just teach me skills; it showed me my potential and reawakened a passion to care for my children,” says Faith.
The months that followed were not merely a period of learning but a journey of self-discovery and empowerment. Faith enhanced her skills in parenting and making mouthwatering pastries, gaining not just technical proficiency; but also a newfound confidence in her abilities.
Beyond the classroom, Faith found a supportive community of fellow learners and mentors who encouraged her every step of the way. They shared stories of resilience and lifted each other during moments of doubt. This network became a source of strength for Faith, reinforcing her belief that she was capable of achieving more than she had ever imagined.
As Faith completed her skills training, equipped with knowledge and a heart full of dreams, she embarked on a journey to turn her newfound expertise into a sustainable livelihood. Equipped with skills, Faith began offering interior decoration services to family members and community residents.
Faith’s first work was to support her brother. She did the interior decoration for the wedding ceremony of her brother for 150 United States Dollars. Her decoration services and pastries became sought-after the wedding.
“I will put more effort into this business to save to establish a decoration and quality catering service in this community. I will make food for workshops, weddings, and other gatherings,” says Faith.
Faith said she will also use some of the money from the business to pay for transportation and other cost for her children’s school. “People are always eating and others are getting married; there will always be customers,” she says with joy as her smile radiates confidence.
