SOS Children’s Villages in Liberia tackles Liberia’s Street Children Crisis

Monrovia, Liberia — SOS Children’s Villages in Liberia, in collaboration with the Government of Liberia,  embarked on an ambitious initiative titled “Support A Child, Save The Future” to tackle the urgent issue of children living in street situations. This partnership aims to provide sustainable solutions for the protection, education, and well-being of children in vulnerable situations.

The Challenge of Street Children in Liberia

The situation for street children in Liberia is dire, with many lacking basic needs – including healthcare and education. A 2022 survey conducted by the government and UNICEF revealed 366,584 children living in street situations across Liberia, with 42% in the capital city center alone. Factors such as poverty, urban migration, and the pandemic contributed to this alarming trend making these children susceptible to exploitation and abuse.

“Saving the next generation is a must. If we don’t do it, who will? If not now, then when?” says Gbeme Horace-Kollie, Minister of Gender, Children and Social Protection.

Support A Child, Save The Future:

SOS Children’s Villages is committed to ensuring that 211 children are reintegrated into safe and nurturing environments. “The future of the children of Liberia is also the future of Africa. Let’s work together to ensure that every child in every corner of this nation has the opportunity to grow up in a family,” said SOS Children’s Villages in Liberia National Director Prosper Ndione.

  • The organization plans to: Strengthen child protection mechanisms and enhance protection services by training 50 caregivers and 250 child warfare committee members.
  • Support 211 children and empower families through the Family Strengthen programme. The goal is to provide a safe, nurturing home for every child giving them the stability they need to thrive.
  • Education and Skills Development by providing access to quality education, or vocational training, ensuring that children can build a better future for themselves.
  • Health and Well-being by providing healthcare services to children monthly, addressing basic and relevant health needs.
  • Advocacy and Awareness by raising awareness about the plight of children in the street, advocating for stronger child protection laws, and increased investment in social services for vulnerable children.

A Call to Action: Supporting Liberia’s Future

The “Support A Child, Save The Future” campaign is a call to action for all Liberians and development partners to invest in child and youth development programmes.

During the official launch of the “Support A Child, Save The Future” campaign, President Joseph N. Boakai emphasized the importance of addressing corruption and misusing public resources to ensure that children have the necessary support. “People misuse government resources and forget that such resources belong to all, especially the future generation.”

The Campaign is more than just a humanitarian effort; it is an investment in Liberia’s future. Children are the foundation of any nation, and by supporting the most vulnerable, Liberia is working to build a stronger, more resilient society. Every child deserves a chance to grow up in a safe environment, receive an education, and reach their full potential.

Liberian President Joseph N. Boakai pledged his fullest support for the National Street Children Project and called on the public to join in contributing towards the welfare and education of vulnerable children.

SOS Children’s Villages in Liberia is working with the government and partners, including UNICEF, to find long-term solutions for children in street situations. By joining forces, we can ensure that every child in Liberia has a chance to live a safe and fulfilling life.
