Tech-Talk Teens Speak Up: “Budgeting Must Reflect Children’s Needs,” Say Delight and Valarie.

On the Day of the African Child, Teens call for real investment—not promises—in their future. Full statement below:

Imagine a world where every child enjoys a safe home, nourishing food, quality education, and access to healthcare, regardless of where they are born. This world is within our reach, but only if our leaders prioritize planning and budgeting for children like you and me.

Today, as we celebrate the Day of the African Child, we shed light on a powerful yet often overlooked topic: how governments allocate resources to safeguard our rights as children. Since 2010, African countries have made significant strides! Liberia has made remarkable advancements too! New schools have been established, vital laws have been enacted, and budgets for health and education have seen notable increases. Yet, our journey is far from complete.

Together, we will strive for a nation where every child’s rights are not just hollow promises but concrete plans, safeguarded and fully funded. United, we can pave the way for a brighter future—starting right now. — Valarie

While planning and budgeting may seem like adult matters, they profoundly impact every child’s life. Why does it matter to us children? It matters because these decisions dictate whether our schools receive essential resources like new textbooks, whether clinics have the medicine we need, and whether children — especially those living on the streets — are supported or neglected.

Thanks to organizations like UNICEF, SOS Children’s Villages, and other partners who continue to advocate for children’s rights.  We are witnessing real progress! This is true accountability in action! Yet, with growing challenges—such as poverty, the rising number of street children, and the impacts of climate change. It is more crucial than ever to ensure that we children have a say in shaping our own future.

We have a voice, and we will raise it! Let’s speak out about what we truly need. Planning for children’s rights must include the perspectives of children themselves, because no one understands our needs better than we do. — Delight
